Chapter 3: The Deity of the Lord Jesus Christ

We believe Jesus Christ is fully God and fully man: eternally the Son, born of the virgin Mary, sinless in life, crucified for our sins, bodily risen from the dead, ascended to the right hand of the Father, and now our Intercessor.

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1). “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth” (John 1:14). “For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily” (Colossians 2:9). He took the form of a servant and humbled himself to death on the cross (Philippians 2:5-8). The virgin birth was foretold: “Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel” (Isaiah 7:14; Matthew 1:23).

His death was a substitute: “He was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities” (Isaiah 53:5). His bodily resurrection is the foundation of the gospel (1 Corinthians 15:3-4, 17). He is now seated at God’s right hand and makes intercession for us (Hebrews 7:25; Romans 8:34).

Where the traditions stand. The deity, virgin birth, sinless life, atoning death, bodily resurrection, and ascension of Christ are held without exception across the Assemblies of God, Foursquare, Baptist, and other evangelical churches. They are non-negotiable marks of the faith.

Carry this verse: “Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever” (Hebrews 13:8).
