Chapter 2: The One True God
We believe there is one God, who is eternally self-existent and revealed as one God in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.
“Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD” (Deuteronomy 6:4). Yet Scripture shows the three persons together. At creation God says, “Let us make man in our image” (Genesis 1:26). At baptism the Son is in the water, the Spirit descends, and the Father speaks (Matthew 3:16-17). Jesus commands baptism “in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost” (Matthew 28:19). Paul closes with a blessing from all three: “The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost, be with you all” (2 Corinthians 13:14).
God is Creator of all things (Genesis 1:1; Psalm 19:1), holy (Isaiah 6:3), and loving (1 John 4:8).
Where the traditions stand. The Assemblies of God, the Foursquare Church, and Evangelical Baptists all affirm the Trinity: one God in three co-equal, co-eternal persons. They reject modalism (the teaching that Father, Son, and Spirit are only modes of one person) as contrary to Matthew 3:16-17. Some Oneness Pentecostal groups teach differently, and the mainstream full gospel churches do not follow them.
Carry this verse: “The LORD our God is one LORD” (Deuteronomy 6:4).
