Chapter 14. Workplace Communication and Professional Skills
Employers value technical skill together with reliability and communication. Studies of employer views often place integrity, communication, courtesy, responsibility and teamwork among the most important workplace skills [27].
Communication
Listen actively and confirm instructions by repeating them.
Speak clearly and politely, using the right technical terms.
Write clearly: job reports, emails, work orders and handover notes.
Use visuals: sketches and diagrams often explain better than words.
Ask questions when unsure, especially about safety.
Teamwork. Share information, respect different roles, help colleagues and give and accept feedback constructively.
Customer service. Greet customers politely, listen to the problem, explain the work and cost, keep promises, and follow up.
Professional ethics. Be honest, respect confidentiality, follow laws and codes, do not take shortcuts that endanger others, and take responsibility for mistakes.
Work habits. Punctuality, tidiness, personal hygiene, appropriate dress, careful care of tools and equipment, and a positive attitude to learning.
Dealing with conflict and stress. Stay calm, address problems early and respectfully, and seek help from a supervisor or trusted person when needed.
Equality and respect. Everyone has a right to a safe workplace free from discrimination and harassment.
Review: Why should you repeat back instructions? (Answer: to confirm that you understood them correctly and avoid errors.)
