Chapter 13. Problem Solving and Study Strategies
Pólya’s four steps [17]:
Understand the problem: what is unknown, what is given, what are the conditions?
Devise a plan: look for a related problem, draw a diagram, try a simpler case, work backwards, look for a pattern.
Carry out the plan, checking each step.
Look back: check the answer, ask whether it is reasonable, and consider other methods.
Good habits
Practise daily, working problems by hand before checking answers.
Write each step clearly, including units.
Estimate answers first to catch errors.
Keep a record of mistakes and revisit them.
Learn formulas by understanding where they come from, not only by memorizing.
Use free resources such as OpenStax [1][2] alongside your course textbook.
Next steps: multivariable calculus, differential equations, discrete mathematics [16], probability and statistics [6][12], and abstract algebra and analysis [7].
