Design, Architecture, Craft, Photography, and Film
❦
The aesthetic subjects reach into the designed world that surrounds us. Many students go on to careers in these fields, and the Sri Lankan education reforms propose subjects such as Film Studies alongside the established arts (Ministry of Education, 2025).
Graphic Design
Graphic design uses the same elements and principles as the visual arts, with a purpose: to communicate. Key ideas include hierarchy (what is read first), alignment, proximity, contrast, repetition, and white space (Lupton & Phillips, 2015). Typography is the art of arranging type; choose typefaces for legibility and mood, and pay attention to spacing and size (Bringhurst, 2004).
Product and Interaction Design
Norman (2013) argues that good design makes the use of an object clear, through affordances (what it allows), signifiers (cues that show how to use it), and feedback. Design thinking combines empathy with users, defining a problem, ideating, prototyping, and testing.
Architecture
Architecture is the art and science of buildings and spaces. Ching (2014) explains architecture through form, space, and order. Sri Lanka offers outstanding examples:
Stupas (dagobas), such as those of Anuradhapura, and Buddhist monasteries (Bandaranayake, 1974).
Kandyan architecture, with the Temple of the Tooth and wooden pillared halls.
Hindu temples (kovils) of the north and east, with gopuram towers and sculpture.
Colonial buildings, such as the Dutch fort at Galle.
Geoffrey Bawa, whose "tropical modernism" blends interior and exterior, building and landscape (Robson, 2002).
Craft
Crafts such as pottery, weaving, batik, wood carving, and mask making connect art with daily life, and they preserve skills handed down through families and communities. Learning a craft teaches patience, materials knowledge, and respect for tradition.
Photography
Photography records and interprets the world. Learn the exposure triangle (aperture, shutter speed, and ISO), composition, and light. Freeman (2007) stresses the habit of seeing. Edit with restraint and respect truth when photographing people and events.
Film
Film combines image, sound, performance, and editing. Bordwell and Thompson (2019) analyze film through mise-en-scene (what is in the frame), cinematography (camera position, movement, and framing), editing, and sound.
| Shot type | Typical use |
| Wide or establishing | Shows the setting |
| Medium | Shows characters and action |
| Close-up | Shows emotion or detail |
| High or low angle | Suggests power or vulnerability |
Film-making is collaborative, and so involves the same discipline as theatre: script, direction, performance, and design, followed by editing.
Digital Art and Animation
Digital tools allow painting, illustration, 3D modeling, animation, music production, and game design. The principles of composition, color, rhythm, and storytelling remain the same.
Sustainability in Design
Consider where materials come from, how long things last, and what happens when they are discarded. Many traditional crafts offer lessons in low-waste, local, and durable making.
