Evaluating Emerging Technologies · Chapter 11 of 51

Part I — Foundations of Technology Evaluation

Part I — Practical Assignment — Technology Evaluation Preliminary Assessment

Select one emerging or rapidly developing technology.

Examples include:

generative AI;

autonomous vehicles;

digital twins;

quantum computing;

blockchain;

gene editing;

synthetic biology;

smart-grid technology;

hydrogen energy;

advanced batteries;

AI-assisted healthcare;

AI-assisted education;

industrial robotics.

Prepare a preliminary evaluation using AMTEF.

Section A: Technology Profile

Name of technology.

Definition.

Current applications.

Development stage.

Technology readiness.

Main developers/users.

Alternative technologies.

Section B: Problem Definition

What problem does the technology address?

How significant is the problem?

What existing solutions are available?

Why is technological intervention being considered?

Section C: Ten-Dimension Evaluation

Evaluate:

technical performance;

functional effectiveness;

economic value;

organizational readiness;

human impact;

social consequences;

ethical responsibility;

environmental sustainability;

risk/security; and

governance/regulation.

Section D: Uncertainty

Identify:

knowns;

known unknowns;

assumptions;

major evidence gaps;

potential unknown unknowns.

Section E: Recommendation Category

Select one evidence-based category:

adopt;

pilot;

adapt;

delay;

monitor; or

reject.

The assignment should not merely state the decision.

It should demonstrate how evidence supports the decision and identify what additional evidence would change the assessment.
