Chapter 2: From the A/L to University and the Engineering Profession

The Z-score

State universities in Sri Lanka select students on the basis of the Z-score, a standardized measure used since 2001 in place of raw marks (Warnapala & Silva, 2011). The reason is fairness: different subjects and combinations have different difficulty and mark distributions, so raw marks are not directly comparable. For one subject, the Z-score of a candidate is

where is the candidate’s raw mark, is the mean mark of the comparison group, and is its standard deviation. A Z-score of 0 means exactly average; +1 means one standard deviation above the mean. The UGC combines the Z-scores of a candidate’s three subjects to rank candidates; the precise method and the admission rules are published each year by the UGC and should be read from its official documents.

Worked example. In a subject the mean is 48 and the standard deviation is 15. A candidate who scores 78 has . A candidate who scores 33 has .

Cut-off marks. The UGC publishes minimum Z-scores (cut-offs) for each degree programme. Since 2015 it has released cut-offs separately by district and by university, which allows students and researchers to compare programmes (Arivalzahan & Kumara, 2024). A statistical study of cut-offs from 2015 to 2021 found that the University of Moratuwa had the most demanding cut-offs for engineering (Arivalzahan & Kumara, 2024). Cut-offs change every year and with the number of places, so use the most recent UGC publication and treat past values only as a guide.

Engineering degrees

Engineering degrees in state universities are offered by several universities, and the University of Moratuwa, the University of Peradeniya, the University of Ruhuna, and the University of Jaffna are among the institutions that run engineering faculties. Programmes differ by discipline. Typical disciplines and the way they use the A/L subjects are:

DisciplineCore ideas from A/LExample work
Civil and structuralStatics, forces, materials, calculusBridges, buildings, water supply, roads
MechanicalMechanics, thermodynamics, fluid mechanicsMachines, engines, manufacturing, energy
Electrical and electronicElectricity, magnetism, electronics, circuits, differential equationsPower systems, communications, control, devices
Computer and softwareLogic, programming, databases, networks, discrete mathematicsSoftware, systems, AI, cybersecurity
Chemical and processStoichiometry, thermodynamics, kinetics, equilibriaProcess plants, materials, environment, food
MaterialsAtomic structure, bonding, mechanical propertiesMetals, polymers, semiconductors, composites
Telecommunications and electronicsWaves, signals, electronics, networkingMobile networks, broadcasting, IoT

Other routes also lead to professional work: technology and IT degrees at state and private institutions, the Open University’s programmes, vocational (NVQ and diploma) routes, and study abroad. The Open University of Sri Lanka also offers an Advanced Certificate in Science (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology) that is accepted in place of A/L passes for certain science programmes (Open University of Sri Lanka, 2022). Because rules and quotas differ, check each institution’s current requirements.

What university will expect

University engineering study expects a strong grasp of four things from the A/L: mathematics (algebra, calculus, vectors, complex numbers), physics (mechanics, waves, electricity and magnetism), problem-solving, and independent learning. Students who arrive with only memorized procedures struggle; those who understand why methods work adapt much more easily. Programming and computational thinking, whether learned through ICT or on one’s own, are now an advantage in every engineering field.

Engineering as a profession

Engineers apply mathematics and science to design, build, and maintain systems that meet human needs under constraints of cost, safety, time, and the environment. Professional engineers are expected to follow codes of ethics, protect public safety, and keep learning throughout their careers. Many countries license or charter professional engineers; in Sri Lanka, chartered engineering status is awarded through professional bodies such as the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka, and requirements are set by that body. Check the institution’s website for current requirements.

Common mistakes

Choosing a degree only by cut-off prestige and not by interest and aptitude.

Using last year’s cut-off as a prediction instead of a rough guide.

Ignoring programming and communication skills, which employers value.

Practice questions

A subject has mean 52 and standard deviation 12. Find the Z-score for a mark of 76. [Z = 2.0]

Why does the UGC use Z-scores instead of raw marks?
