ICT for Commerce Students

❦

ICT is a popular third subject for commerce students, and the same A/L ICT syllabus is used in all streams. It has units on the concept of ICT, computer systems, data representation, networks, systems analysis, databases, programming, and web development (NIE, n.d.-i; Tutorlanka, n.d.). The companion volume Advanced Level Physical Science describes these units in detail (including the Python code and SQL examples); this chapter highlights what matters most to a commerce student.

Spreadsheets for Accounting and Statistics

A spreadsheet is the most useful business tool. Learn:

  • Formulas and functions: SUM, AVERAGE, IF, VLOOKUP or XLOOKUP, SUMIF, COUNTIF, and financial functions (NPV, IRR, PMT).
  • Data presentation: tables, charts, and pivot tables.
  • Models: build a loan schedule, a break-even model, or a budget, and use what-if analysis.
  • Good practice: separate inputs from calculations, label clearly, and check for errors.

E-Commerce and Digital Payments

E-commerce includes online retail, marketplaces, mobile commerce, and digital payments. Understand payment methods, encryption and HTTPS, fraud risks, digital marketing, logistics, and customer data protection. The Electronic Transactions Act, No. 19 of 2006 and the Personal Data Protection Act, No. 9 of 2022 are examples of Sri Lankan laws relevant to digital business; check their current provisions.

Artificial Intelligence in Business

AI tools can help analyze data, draft documents, support customers, and forecast demand. They also bring risks: errors and invented facts, bias, privacy breaches, and over-reliance. Follow your school's policy, disclose any use, and verify the output (Thesify, 2026).

Tips

Practise on a computer daily, learn a programming language at a basic level, and apply ICT in your other subjects, for example by modeling the accounting equation or plotting a supply and demand graph in a spreadsheet.
