Introduction: The Commerce Pathway
❦
The Advanced Level (A/L) is the two-year course in grades 12 and 13 that ends with the General Certificate of Education (Advanced Level) examination, which is also the entrance qualification for Sri Lankan state universities (Wikipedia, "GCE Advanced Level in Sri Lanka," n.d.).
The Commerce Stream
The Commerce stream has three main subjects: Accounting, Business Studies, and Economics. Students normally choose at least two of these and may take a third subject such as Business Statistics or ICT (StudentLanka, 2017; Wikipedia, "GCE Advanced Level in Sri Lanka," n.d.). Popular combinations include Accounting, Business Studies, and Economics; Accounting, Economics, and Business Statistics; and Accounting, Business Studies, and ICT (StudentLanka, 2017; StudyWay, 2025). Because degree programmes set their own subject requirements, check the UGC admissions handbook before you choose.
| Subject | Main content | Why it matters |

How Admission Works
Entry is based on the Z-score, which standardizes each subject result against all candidates of the same subject: for each subject, Z = (mark − mean) ÷ standard deviation, and the final ranking uses the three main subjects (Induwara.lk, n.d.-a). Candidates must also meet minimum requirements, including the Common General Test (CGT) and General English, and the district quota system affects selection. Cut-offs change every year.
