Introduction: The Biological Science Pathway
❦
The Advanced Level (A/L) is the two-year course in grades 12 and 13 that ends with the General Certificate of Education (Advanced Level) examination, which is also the entrance qualification for Sri Lankan state universities (Wikipedia, "GCE Advanced Level in Sri Lanka," n.d.).
The Biological Science Stream
The stream consists of four subjects: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Agricultural Science. Biology and Chemistry are compulsory, and students choose between Physics and Agricultural Science as the third subject (Wikipedia, "GCE Advanced Level in Sri Lanka," n.d.). Because Physics is needed for medicine and for several other degrees, most students aiming for the health professions take Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, while those aiming for agriculture and related fields may take Agricultural Science. This book covers all four subjects, so that you can decide and prepare.
| Subject | Main content | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Biology | Cell and molecular biology, evolution and diversity, plant and animal physiology, genetics, recombinant DNA, ecology, microbiology | The core of medicine and the life sciences |
| Chemistry | Atomic structure, bonding, energetics, kinetics, equilibrium, electrochemistry, inorganic and organic chemistry | The language of biochemistry and pharmacology |
| Physics | Mechanics, waves, heat, electricity, magnetism, electronics, modern physics | The basis of medical imaging, instruments, and physiology |
| Agricultural Science | Crop production, soil science, plant breeding, pest management, animal husbandry, food, and agricultural economics | Food security, agriculture, and rural development |
Where the Stream Leads
| Pathway | Examples |
|---|---|
| Medicine and health | MBBS (Medicine), Dental Surgery (BDS), Pharmacy, Nursing, Medical Laboratory Sciences, Physiotherapy, Radiography, Optometry |
| Veterinary science | Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science |
| Agriculture and food | Agriculture, Food Science and Technology, Fisheries and Aquaculture, Animal Science, Plantation Management |
| Biological and environmental sciences | Biological Science degrees (Botany, Zoology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Genetics), Environmental Science, Forestry |
| Biotechnology and research | Biotechnology, Bioinformatics, Biomedical Science |
| Other | Some degrees accept several streams, including programmes in the physical sciences, management, and education |
Some programmes accept students from both the Biological Science and Physical Science streams, and some require passes in particular subjects, so always check the UGC admissions handbook (Induwara.lk, n.d.-a).
How Admission Works
Entry to state universities is based on the Z-score, which standardizes each subject result against the other candidates of the same subject and stream: for each subject, Z = (mark − mean) ÷ standard deviation. The Z-score for ranking is based on the three main subjects (Induwara.lk, n.d.-b). Selection also involves the district quota system, minimum subject passes, and the Common General Test and General English requirement. Medicine is the most competitive: published analyses of earlier years show that the cut-off Z-scores for medical faculties are high, around 1.9 or above in many districts, and higher for the best-subscribed faculties (StudentLanka, 2022). These values change every year, so use them only as a rough guide.
How This Book Is Organized
| Part | Chapters | Content |
|---|---|---|
| I | 1 to 2 | Orientation and study skills |
| II | 3 to 14 | Biology |
| III | 15 to 18 | Chemistry |
| IV | 19 to 20 | Physics with medical applications |
| V | 21 to 23 | Agricultural Science |
| VI | 24 to 28 | Careers and professional values, a study plan, conclusion, glossary, and references |
Each chapter lists key ideas, essential facts, common mistakes, and exam tips. The book is a map and a revision guide; use it with your school textbooks, the NIE syllabi and resource books, and past papers.
