How to Use This Book
This book gives Advanced Level students in the Arts stream a complete foundation in the subjects most commonly offered: Political Science, Geography, Logic, Economics, Languages (English, Sinhala, Tamil, French, Italian, Dutch and others), History, Media Studies and the Aesthetic subjects (Art, Music, Drama and Dance). A student normally chooses a combination of three subjects, so the book is organized in parts, one for each subject area, and the final chapter explains how to choose and combine them. Each chapter presents key concepts, important facts, worked ideas and review questions with answers. Numbers in square brackets, such as [1], point to the numbered References at the end.
Important note on the syllabus. This book is a general, concept-based foundation and is not a replacement for the official syllabus. Subjects offered, combinations allowed, syllabus content and examination formats can change. Always check the current G.C.E. (A/L) syllabuses and circulars of the National Institute of Education and the Department of Examinations [55][56], and follow your teacher’s guidance. Laws, statistics and political and economic conditions change, so verify current facts in official sources.
